I got this from Sarabande, the Mary McCarthy Prize. Look at who was a runner up! I guess he has a collection that he's sending out now. Also, do they write the little note so you'll keep sending in your manuscript even though you're never going to win? Probably.
any word from that agent pursuing appel?
ReplyDeleteRadio silence...but will send up a flare as soon as I hear anything.
ReplyDeleteI got same exact rejection.
ReplyDeleteYes, the handwritten note is universal.
ReplyDeleteThe web site said the announcement of the winners was going to be made in July. I guess they ran early. Too few submissions? Speed-reading judge?
ReplyDeleteEh, I don't see how you can bash him for this--not the same. This is a book contest. And it's Sarabande. Good press.
ReplyDeleteAt least he's trying to do more than win The Roanoke Review's contest.
Yep-- same handwriting on my rejection. And the same croseed-out "Dear Writer" in favor of my name. Even before I saw your blog, I had the same cynical feeling that they were doing it to everyone's rejection so we'd all fell, um, "special".
ReplyDeleteBashing? I thought we were his official fan club page.
ReplyDeleteHe's a finalist in this year's Crazyhorse prize, too.
ReplyDeleteJacob Appel just got a finalist nod from Crazyhorse Fiction Contest.
ReplyDeleteEcho, echo.
ReplyDeleteHow appropriate that his collection is title Natural Selection...considering his bioethicist stances.
