An Ideal Non-Future

In a rejection of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, one editor wrote of John Le Carre, "He hasn't got any future."

  1. Why do editors say things like that? It's almost guaranteed to come back and bite them in the tuchus.

  2. I used to be an actress and have realized that this early "training" in rejection has been invaluable for inevitable same with writing.

I am still trying to work out how some of my stuff has been called "Spartan and pithy" by one editor and "baroque and dull" by another. Occasionally I feel as if I've missed the punchline. Next!

(That Time cover seems really quaint now, doesn't it?)
