Fiction Villian

An LROD reader writes that s/he was accepted at Fictionville, Yay!  But five minutes after sending in a picture and bio, the fickle editor of the journal "changed his mind." The editor claimed it had nothing to do with the photo and bio, but with the story. Says the writer: "I ain't even that bad looking."

    Wow, I never had an acceptance retracted ... that's worse than a rejection by a long shot!

    The 15 or so people who actually read Ficitionville would not have noticed if the editor had given a pass to a story considered borderline accept. Really, we're not talking about the Paris Review--with thousands of subscribers and millions of readers, where there is a reputation to maintain in printing only the cream of the cream of the cream.

    I think Ficville make a bad karmic transaction. Sacrificing courtesy to preserve some obscure aesthetic. Why not just publish it if it passed once? Why make such an ass of yourself, Ficville editor?

    It's a miscarriage of decency to retract an acceptance. This is the first I've ever heard of such a thing, and it warrants a public tide of dismay---and what better forum than LROD. This 'editor' can consider the present comment as the first wave of outrage, which, with any luck, will push the guy into a steep meditation on the ethics of editorship. The man's a bum.

    I wonder why it was retracted. With such a small pool of contributors, I bet most are friends of the editor. Perhaps one of the editor's friends submitted something similar after the first dude got an acceptance, and then the editor decide to publish his friend's story instead. Just a guess.

    This gives webzines a bad name. Even if you are the editor of the tiniest most unread obscure webzine, you have to have some professionalism, geez!

    I don't know if you read the newspaper comics much (who does?), but the strip "Pearls Before Swine" has been running a series on "book editing"...they're pretty spot-on, especially the one from the 9th...

    Pretty unprofessional behavior from Fictionville. On the plus side, at least it is so ridiculous that now people will know to never ever submit to them.
