Happily, Rejection *Does* Suck

I snitched the above rejection from BlogLily (without permissions: hope that's okay). The whole thing just cracks me up from journal name to rejection attitude to personal scrawl message; I had to post it here.

The note says: "Rejection Sucks: Check out Pheobe Kate Foster's 8 issue retrospective review of Happy and see what is being said about us!" I guess the editors felt that this was as good a time as any for a little self-promotion.

By the way, the handwritten note on the side says: "Thanks The Pornographer isn't for happy." Priceless!

I found your Blog after doing a search for Sarah McGrath, who by this time, is probably in hiding over the Margaret B. Jones fiasco at Riverhead. True to form, she is passing the blame out to the author (who she worked with for three years) and the agent.

Funny thing is, one look at Ms. Jones (pen name) photo on Penguin's Web Site and it is a mystery how anyone could have believed her story that she is half American Indian.

Ms. Jones older sister is right: this could have been stopped way before the book actually made it into print!

Bet Ms. McGrath wishes now she had sent a "witty" reject to Ms. Jones!!

This is my all-time favorite rejection. I love this journal -- truly -- and I'm determined to get them to take one of my stories. How they could have turned down The Pornographer is beyond me, by the way.
