I Must Be in a Bad Mood

I've had writers block before, but this HuffPo thing bugs me a little bit. Not much, but a little. In other news, I'm starting to think about my novel again. Also, I'm a little depressed about publishing.

Don't despair, W,R. Here's a little anecdote: my novel has been languishing at a major press for a couple years. Before that, my agent roused enough interest in it for a bidding war. I went with the money—and with what turned out to be the craziest fucking editor, apparently. Fired editor, sold it to one of the other editors who had wanted it initially and there you have it—a stalled career. I just turned in the final draft of the novel and am waiting to hear back, even though the pub date is scheduled for this winter. I've heard nothing and that was over two weeks ago. The problem as I see it is that they know they have us all over a barrel and they also know that they can behave any old way they please. I've often thought about taking the book back from my publisher, changing the title, and giving myself a pen name, then firing my agent and finding another one, who will then send the ms. out again. There's only so much bullshit I can swallow before I have to take matters into my own hands. The very people who swore to be supporting us often become those who end up supporting us the least. This is what has happened to me, as far as I'm concerned. Yet I continue to play their awful, suck-ass game because what are my options? I'm not going to let these mofos drag me down any more than they already have. So cheer up. There's always someone worse off than you.
