When my former agent, who quit the business, started having personal public exchanges with all her other former clients, I got all weirded out about it and ended up having to delete her as a "friend" from my Facebook page. Why I ever thought it was a good idea to be "friends" with an agent, not to mention my former agent, I cannot say. But I do know this: it's a mistake I will never make again.

My daughter's boss asked everyone at work to be a "friend" on facebook. It seemed an insult to say no, but do you want your boss to know what you do on the weekend? Plus, what if you said awful things about work, which my daughter told me everyone does?
I do not get the "friending" of bosses. I have a friend who worked at Microsoft and hated her boss. She finally finished her contract but he's still "friended". I asked her why she never logs into Facebook? Her reply was: "I don't want to run into my ex-boss on there."
Unbelievable.
I deleted my personal facebook account a long time ago. It's stupid. I already have the email addresses of everyone I want to communicate with. I hated it when people I didn't like in real life tried to friend me. Gak! (and that's not a golden apple!)
Some agents and editors will insist that you get a facebook account for your pseudonym or author persona, and I guess that's good for marketing, so I don't mind. Your editor can't force you to check it everyday. But in 10 years the Facebook fad will be ancient history. Anyone remember Friendster? And who does Myspace anymore besides 13 yo's?
And I'm not an old fogey, I'm 29.
What a brilliant idea; I love your blog. Now I feel so much better that I am not the only one who has enough rejections to wall paper my office!
